About San Francisco Gynecological Society

Established 1929

The San Francisco Gynecological Society is the oldest and largest professional OB/GYN Society in Northern California.  Its members comprise over 150 Board-Certified Obstetricians and Gynecologists.  The Society holds up to seven educational meetings a year providing education and discourse on various topics of interest. The objective of the Society is the promotion of knowlege relation to Obstetrics and Gynecology.  The Society is a 501(3)(c) non-profit corporation.

Dr. Karen R. Meckstroth is director of the UCSF Center for Pregnancy Options. She is also a generalist obstetrician and gynecologist in the UCSF faculty division at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center, and she serves as consulting medical director for the Women's Community Clinic in San Francisco.

Meckstroth’s particular interests include the medication misoprostol, medical abortion and pain control with gynecological procedures.

Meckstroth earned her medical degree at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. She completed a residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the Los Angeles County and USC Medical Center. At UCSF, she completed a fellowship in family planning clinical care and research, as well as advanced clinical research training in epidemiology and biostatistics. She also has a master's degree in health policy and management from the University of California, Berkeley.

Meckstroth is a fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. She is a member of the Society of Family Planning and serves on a regional advisory panel for Physicians for Reproductive Health
